COMMUNITY HEALTH CAMP 2023

Bringing Essential Healthcare Services Closer to the Community

On 09 September 2023, the Lions Club of Colombo LEADS, in collaboration with the Moraketiya Pannipitiya Business Association, conducted a comprehensive Community Health Camp to provide essential health screening, medical consultation, and basic healthcare services to people in the surrounding community.

The project attracted a large number of people, including many who were in need of medical attention and regular health monitoring. The camp provided an opportunity for participants to have their general health conditions assessed and to receive professional medical advice and appropriate referrals where necessary.

The initial health assessment included Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement, blood pressure monitoring, medical history taking, and consultation. Blood sugar screening was also conducted, including Random Blood Sugar (RBS), Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), and HbA1c testing, enabling participants to identify potential health concerns and seek appropriate medical care.

Participants requiring further treatment or specialized medical attention were referred to the relevant clinics and healthcare services. An eye clinic was also conducted as an important component of the programme, providing vision screening, ophthalmological consultation, and reading glasses for those who required them.

Through the dedicated efforts of Lions, medical professionals, volunteers, and the Moraketiya Pannipitiya Business Association, the health camp provided a valuable healthcare service to the community while promoting greater awareness of the importance of regular health screening and early detection of health conditions.

EYE CLINIC – LION BRIG. CHITHRAL & TEAM

The Eye Clinic was one of the key services provided at the health camp and was coordinated by Lion Brig. Chithral and his dedicated team, with the support of qualified ophthalmologists.

Participants underwent eye examinations and received professional advice regarding their vision and eye health. Those identified as requiring further medical attention were guided towards appropriate treatment and specialized care.

Reading glasses were also provided to participants who required them, helping many people overcome difficulties with near vision in their day-to-day activities.

The clinic also played an important role in identifying patients who subsequently required cataract treatment. A total of 40 cataract surgeries were later facilitated for patients identified through this health camp, as part of a separate Lions service project.

The dedicated contribution of Lion Brig. Chithral, his team, and the supporting ophthalmologists made the Eye Clinic a particularly valuable service to the community.

MEDICAL CONSULTATION – LION DR. SUBHASHI

The medical consultation clinic was conducted by our own Lion, Dr. Subhashi, who provided individual medical assessments and professional advice to participants.

As part of the consultation, participants’ blood pressure was checked, their medical histories were reviewed, and their health concerns were discussed with the doctor. Based on the findings, appropriate medical advice was provided, and participants requiring further investigation or treatment were directed to the relevant healthcare services.

The clinic provided an important opportunity for members of the community to receive medical attention and guidance, particularly for those who may not have had regular access to medical consultations.

MEDICAL CONSULTATION – LION DR. PRIYANTHA

Another medical consultation clinic was conducted by our own Lion, Dr. Priyantha, providing participants with an additional opportunity to receive professional medical assessment and advice.

Participants underwent blood pressure checks and individual medical consultations, with their health history and reported concerns taken into consideration. Where necessary, participants were advised to seek further investigations, treatment, or specialized medical care.

The active involvement of our own medical professionals strengthened the health camp and enabled the Lions Club to provide direct and meaningful healthcare assistance to the community.

OTHER MEDICAL CLINICS & SERVICES

Several other medical clinics and healthcare services were also conducted during the Health Camp, providing valuable medical attention and guidance to the community.

Qualified medical professionals attended to participants according to their individual healthcare needs, while our Lions provided dedicated assistance and support to the doctors and clinic teams, contributing greatly to the smooth operation of the clinics and the overall success of this meaningful community service project.

BLOOD SUGAR SCREENING – LION NISHANTHA & LION MANJULA

A dedicated blood sugar screening clinic was conducted by our own Lions, Lion Nishantha and Lion Manjula, providing participants with an opportunity to assess their blood glucose levels and identify possible signs of diabetes or other blood sugar-related concerns.

The screening included Random Blood Sugar (RBS), Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), and HbA1c testing, according to the requirements of the participants. The results provided useful information for identifying individuals who may require further medical evaluation and ongoing monitoring.

Participants with findings requiring further attention were advised accordingly and referred for appropriate medical consultation and follow-up.

The dedicated service provided by Lion Nishantha and Lion Manjula contributed significantly to the preventive healthcare objectives of the project and helped promote greater awareness of the importance of regular blood sugar monitoring and early detection.
