Health Screening and Medical Care for the Community

The Lions Club of Colombo LEADS, in collaboration with the Moraketiya Pannipitiya Business Association, successfully conducted a Community Health Camp on 05 September 2026 at the Parama Dhamma Temple, Pannipitiya.

The Health Camp brought together medical professionals, specialist doctors, Lions, and volunteers to provide a wide range of healthcare services to the community. A large number of people participated in the programme and received medical consultations, health screening, diagnostic investigations, specialist services, and other medical services.

Participants were given the opportunity to have their health conditions assessed, identify possible health concerns, receive medical advice, and obtain referrals for further investigation or treatment where necessary.

The programme included eye and dental clinics, medical consultations, blood sugar screening, laboratory testing, diagnostic screening, specialist consultations, and a blood donation campaign. The different services were arranged to provide participants with access to various healthcare facilities at the Health Camp.

Lion Lal Jayarathna, as the Project Chairperson, played an important role in coordinating the Health Camp and overseeing the arrangements for the successful conduct of the project.

The successful completion of the Health Camp was made possible with the tremendous support and assistance of Lion Nishantha, Lion Manjula, Lion Capt. Kalwila, Lion Eng. Nilantha, Lion Dr. Subhashi, Lion Dr. Priyantha, Lion Eng. Chinthaka, Ms. Yasoda, Mr. Devin, and Mr. Rohana, whose support was greatly appreciated throughout the organization and conduct of the event.

EYE CLINIC

An Eye Clinic was conducted to provide eye examinations and vision-related medical consultations to participants attending the Health Camp. Qualified ophthalmologists and supporting staff attended to the participants and provided professional advice and guidance on their eye health.

A total of 500 pairs of reading glasses were provided to members of the community who required assistance with near vision.

The eye examinations also helped identify patients with cataracts who require further treatment. These patients will be followed up through a separate cataract surgery project, under which the necessary surgeries and lens implantation will be provided free of charge.

The Eye Clinic was supported by Lion Nishantha and Lion Manjula, together with the ophthalmologists, medical staff, Lions, and volunteers who assisted with the clinic.

VISION SCREENING FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN

A separate vision screening programme was conducted for schoolchildren to identify children with vision difficulties that could affect their education and day-to-day activities.

Following the screening, 100 pairs of spectacles will be provided to schoolchildren who were identified as requiring vision correction.

This part of the project was handled separately by Lion Chinthaka, who coordinated the vision screening and arrangements for the schoolchildren.

CATARACT SURGERY & LENS IMPLANTATION

During the Community Health Camp 2026, several participants were found to have cataract conditions requiring surgical treatment. The Lions Club of Colombo LEADS has arranged a separate follow-up project to provide the required treatment.

A total of 50 patients will receive cataract surgery with the required intraocular lens implantation, completely free of charge. 39 patients were identified during the Health Camp, and the remaining 11 patients will be identified before the cataract surgery project is conducted.

The project will be coordinated by Lion Chinthaka, who will handle the necessary arrangements and follow-up for the patients receiving treatment.

MEDICAL CONSULTATION – LION DR. SUBHASHI

Our own Lion, Dr. Subhashi, provided medical consultations to participants throughout the Health Camp. Patients were assessed according to their individual health concerns, their medical histories were reviewed, and appropriate clinical advice was provided.

Blood pressure monitoring and general medical assessment formed an important part of the consultation process. Participants requiring further investigation, treatment, or specialist care were advised accordingly and directed to the appropriate healthcare services.

The involvement of Lion Dr. Subhashi helped provide accessible medical consultation and professional guidance to members of the community.

MEDICAL CONSULTATION – LION DR. PRIYANTHA

Our own Lion, Dr. Priyantha, also provided medical consultations to participants attending the Health Camp. Individual medical assessments were conducted based on the participants’ health concerns and medical requirements.

Blood pressure checks, medical history assessment, and professional consultation were provided, with appropriate recommendations made for further investigation, treatment, or follow-up where necessary.

The involvement of Lion Dr. Priyantha further added to the medical services available at the Health Camp and allowed participants to receive professional healthcare advice within the community.

DENTAL CLINIC – DENTAL CARE & TREATMENT

The Dental Clinic provided dental examinations, treatment, and professional advice to participants. Services included dental fillings, cleaning, and tooth extraction, according to the individual requirements of the patients.

The clinic provided an opportunity for members of the community to receive dental care and address existing oral health concerns, while also receiving advice on maintaining good dental health.

The dental service was coordinated by Lion Chinthaka, with the support of the dental professionals, Lions, and volunteers.

BLOOD SUGAR SCREENING

Blood sugar screening was conducted for participants as part of the Health Camp. The screening included Random Blood Sugar (RBS), Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), and HbA1c testing, according to the requirements of the participants.

The results provided useful information for identifying individuals who may require further medical evaluation, treatment, or ongoing monitoring.

The Blood Sugar Screening was handled by Lion Nishantha and Lion Manjula, with the assistance of the medical staff and volunteers.

LABORATORY TESTING

Laboratory testing was provided to participants who required further medical investigation during the Health Camp. The services included Full Blood Count (FBC) and other relevant laboratory tests.

The laboratory testing was carried out by Pannipitiya Nursing Home, with their medical and laboratory staff attending to the participants and assisting with the required investigations.

The arrangements for providing these laboratory services were coordinated and handled by Lion Lal Jayarathna.

DIAGNOSTIC SCREENING SERVICES

A range of diagnostic screening services was made available during the Health Camp, allowing participants to undergo important investigations as part of their health assessment.

These services included ultrasound scanning, lung function testing, ECG, hearing tests, and other relevant diagnostic investigations. The results assisted medical professionals in assessing participants’ health conditions and identifying those who required further medical attention, investigation, or treatment.

The arrangements for these diagnostic services were coordinated and handled by Lion Lal Jayarathna.

SPECIALIST MEDICAL CONSULTATIONS

Specialist medical consultations were conducted by qualified medical professionals covering a wide range of healthcare needs. These included paediatric, orthopaedic, cardiology, and other specialist consultations.

Participants were able to discuss their health concerns with the relevant specialists and receive professional advice and recommendations regarding further investigations or treatment where required.

The specialist consultations and related arrangements were coordinated and handled by Lion Lal Jayarathna.

BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN

A Blood Donation Campaign was conducted as part of the Health Camp, providing members of the community with an opportunity to donate blood and support patients who require blood transfusions.

The campaign was supported by the medical team, Lions, and volunteers, who assisted with the arrangements and the blood donation process.

OTHER MEDICAL CLINICS & SERVICES

Several other medical clinics and healthcare services were also conducted during the Health Camp, providing additional medical attention, screening, and professional guidance to participants.

Medical professionals, Lions, and volunteers worked together to guide participants to the relevant services and assist them according to their individual healthcare needs.

The arrangements for these additional clinics and services were coordinated and handled by Lion Lal Jayarathna, with the support of the medical professionals, Lions, and volunteers.
