DONATION TO SINHARAJA CAVE MONASTERY

The Lions Club of Colombo LEADS extended its support to the Sinharaja Cave Monastery in Sri Lanka on 13 December 2020 by donating one metric ton of dry rations to support the daily needs of its 60 monks, including young novices. The COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide lockdown had severely affected the monastery, as donations from visitors and devotees had come to a halt. Recognising the urgent need for assistance, the club organised this project to provide essential food supplies and educational resources to the monastery community.

A large number of young monks reside at the Sinharaja Cave Monastery, which serves as both a place of worship and an educational centre. During the pandemic, the disruption of visitor donations created significant difficulties in meeting the daily requirements of the monastery. The donation of one metric ton of dry rations provided timely assistance to help sustain the monks during this challenging period.

The project also recognised the importance of education in the development of young monks. In addition to the food donation, five personal computers and two UPS devices were provided to the monastery’s Pirivena to improve its educational facilities and strengthen the learning environment.

The project addressed both the immediate nutritional needs of the Sinharaja Cave Monastery and the educational requirements of its young monks. The donation of one metric ton of dry rations, five personal computers, and two UPS devices provided essential support during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping sustain daily activities and enhance educational opportunities at the Pirivena.

The computers and UPS devices were intended to provide young monks with improved access to computer facilities and support their educational activities. Rural Pirivenas often operate with limited resources, making such contributions particularly valuable in maintaining a suitable learning environment.

During the programme, Chief Venerable Demuwawatha Chandananda Thero expressed his appreciation for the timely assistance provided by the Lions Club of Colombo LEADS. He highlighted the importance of the donation in supporting the monastery and its residents during a period of considerable difficulty.

The project demonstrated the value of collective effort and community service in supporting rural religious and educational institutions. By responding to both the nutritional and educational needs of the monastery, the club sought to make a meaningful contribution to the well-being and development of the young monks.

The Lions Club of Colombo LEADS extends its heartfelt gratitude to all club members whose generosity, dedication, and cooperation contributed to the success of this initiative. Their support helped provide essential resources at a time when the monastery needed assistance most.

This project reflects the club’s continuing commitment to humanitarian service, education, and community well-being, guided by the spirit of fellowship and service to those in need.
